Even for year 2007 GVS group has agreed to adopt a new Cystic Fibrosis Foundation research project with a donation.
The research project, called "Biochemical adaptation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa to the airways of cystic fibrosis patients" is led by the Department of Biochemical and Organic Chemistry at Naples "Federico 11" University and by the Department of Cell Biology at University of Rome "La Sapienza" in Italy.
The project involves 6 researchers for two years, and it is aimed to elucidate the structure of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) clinical strain isolated at early and chronic stages of colonisation from patients with CF. Elucidate the structure of peptidoglycan (PGN) and muramyl peptides produced by PA clinical strains isolated at early and chronic stages of colonisation from patients with CF. Analyse the immunostimulatory activity of the PA strains, isolated during the different phases of the disease in CF and non-CF bronchial epithelial cells and HEK293 cells. Measure the immunostimulatory activity of the LPSs and PGNs - structural or naturally shed by bacterial cultures - isolated before and after a chronic infection in the same model systems as above.
With this initiative GVS wants to share the effort carried out by Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and its many researchers, and to tangibly contribute to the life expectancy of the numerous Cystic Fibrosis patients.
