GVS supports Cystic Fibrosis Foundation research project

GVS group has agreed to adopt a Fondazione Fibrosi Cistica research project with a donation.

The research project, called "Role of polymorphisms in innate immunity genes with respect to lung disease modulation in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis " will be led by the Department of Development and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Trieste, and by the Molecular Pathology Lab / Cystic Fibrosis Centre /Azienda Ospedaliera of Verona.

The project will involve 8 researchers for a year, and it is aimed at examining the presence of some variants in several genes specializing in bacterial defense and in inflammatory reaction. The hypothesis is that such variants might, to some extent, affect the appearance of lung disease in CF patients, by aggravating or weakening it: the focus is on the so-called " modifying genes ", that could explain the different illness severity observable in patients with identical mutations of the CFTR gene.

With this initiative GVS wants to share the effort carried out by Fondazione Fibrosi Cistica and its many researchers, and to tangibly contribute to the life expectancy of the numerous Cystic Fibrosis patients.
